You might be familiar with an old copywriting tool called AIDA. Essentially, it is the structure compelling and converting sales copy will take. The AIDA principle is a time tested and well followed sales copy strategy. It is known as the motivating sequence, they way you hook a reader and compel them to make a purchase.

There are many other well known formulas, ACCA: Awareness, Comprehension, Conviction, and Action. The Four Ps is another: Picture, Promise, Prove, and Push. Since AIDA is the most commonly used and easiest to remember we’ll focus on it.

AIDA:

A Attention - Capture your audience’s attention.
I Interest - Get, and hold, your reader’s interest.
D Desire - Build desire for your product or service
A Action - Inspire Action. Get them to buy!

Let’s briefly take a look at each section.

Attention. This first step in the sequence is generally accomplished by your headline or a compelling graphic. An easy technique here is to ask your reader an interesting question or give them a compelling statement. For example, “How to pay absolutely no taxes this year. Legally.”

Interest. Okay, you have their attention. Now what? Now you hook your reader by offering them a solution to their problems. Make a promise and then go about explaining how you’re going to follow through on that promise. This can be accomplished in two paragraphs.

The first paragraph gives the promise. The second tells how you’ll follow through. The key to a good promise, and holding your prospect’s interest is to make your copy about them. How are you going to help them?

Desire. Here is where you provide your prospect reasons for buying your product or using your service. Write to express what they’ll receive. Tell them about the features, facts, and above all else the benefits of purchasing your product or service. Use strong action verbs and emotional copy to compel them to buy.

Action. This is generally considered the easiest part of any sale copy. This is where you tell your reader specifically what you’re selling, what it costs and what action they need to take to purchase. It is the BUY NOW part of your copy.

Many sales letters and sales pages go on to include a PS or a testimonial to encourage the reader to act, however this isn’t always necessary. If your copy is strong enough, your prospect won’t be able to resist clicking on the “Buy Now” button and making a purchase.

Rhea’s family not only get involved in business from a young age but they’ve also learned to diversify into several different areas.

I think this is very important. I personally don’t ever feel comfortable putting all my eggs in one basket. I’ve just started to look into real estate investing and this is something I’m hoping to accomplish in the near future.

I also don’t like to depend on one source of income from one website. If a website is doing well and gets a large amount of traffic, that’s wonderful but i’m also very aware that could easily change.

I guess Rhea’s post is just a good reminder to keep diversifying and also to have a good backup plan for other ways to make money if something was to happen to one of my income streams.

What about you? Do you believe in diversifying in business? I know some people strongly believe in building one thing up and sticking to just that, but personally I think that’s a tad risky. If you do have ONE business only then at the very least having two or three income streams is important. What do you think?

I’ll find out in late or early November… but anyways, since signing up I’ve received letters from like 10 different charities asking me to run in support of them.

I’ve had a hard time decising between them all because really how do you say yes to one cause and no to the other, when they all need help… know what I mean?

But today I got a letter from the Children with Leukemia foundation that really stood out. All the letters I’ve received from other charities have just said run for our team, help a good cause, blah, blah but this letter was different. Here’s a small excerpt:

Even though you don’t as yet know whether you have a place to run, you may want to start your training. We have enclosed three training plans that we hope may be of use to you.

You should hear from the Marathon Office at the beginning of December as to whether you have a place via the ballot. Until then, (or even afterwards), if you have any queries, we are only too happy to hear from you.

I thought that was pretty neat. They’re sending me something helpful and useful and not straight out saying choose us. It’s very subtle and definitely stood out from the pile of other letters I’ve received.

In marketing and business, I’ve always believed in giving. It’s a known fact that most people have developed ad blindness and tend to run at the first sign that someone’s selling something.

Instead, if you concentrate on helping people, you will instantly stand out in their minds and they will be more likely to buy or support you and your business.

This lesson was one I learned with my first business. I didn’t know much about marketing at the time but by instinct I knew that I should be nice, polite and do that little bit extra no one else seemed to be doing. My business grew quickly as a result.

When I started my online business I learned from people like Ken Envoy and Alice Seba that giving is definitely the way to build an online business.

I guess it’s pretty much common sense, people do business with people they like and that treat them well. My mom always said remember your manners and you’ll be fine ;-)

This would explain why people like Matt Furey, who sells millions of dollars of products online, have such so-so sites. In fact, Matt’s just had his site revaamped — it was actually uglier before.

And take a look at Dan’s own website, it’s certainly not flashy or sleek. Dan and Matt can easily afford to pay something to build them any kind of website they want… yet they deliberately keep their sites shall we say “home-made.” You get a sense that there’s a real person behind the site rather than some cold and perfect entity.

This was a good lesson for me because in the past I’ve worried about having a “pretty” site and that doesn’t really make much of a difference online.

Take my site here for example, on two browsers the header doesn’t even line up to the top but I’ve left it that way becuase it’s working for me. People are signing up for my updates list and revisiting the site over and over again.

I may fix it at some point but it’s a good reminder not to spend time trying to perfect anything and instead spend time getting things done… things that make money.

So if you’re thinking about spending time or money giving your site a makeover, I would say concentrate on the structure of the site and the marketing and don’t worry too much about the little details.

There’s no such thing as perfection and you can always improve as you go along… if you wait to get it just right you may never get around to finishing!
