Are You Taking Advantage of Your Local Media?
Small businesses often spend huge amounts of money on advertising and yet ignore the free advertising options right in their own backyard.
Local media attention can be great for your business (even if you operate online). The best part about getting local media attention is you can do so without having to spend a penny on advertising. Even better than free publicity, you’ll gain media attention that’s much more credible than any print ad.
So how do you attract local media attention?
One of the easiest things you can do is write a press release. A press release should read like a news-worthy story and not an advertisement. Local and global publications are always on the lookout for interesting stories to print.
Local press is often times the easiest way to get your feet wet. Local publications specifically look for stories that have a community interest at heart.
Think of an interesting story about your business the local community will be interested in. Are you donating a percentage of sales to the local school or hospital? Are you having a grand opening and providing employment for students in the area? Both these topics would make for a great press release.
You can also distribute your press release to an online news wire and reporters and editors often scan these for new stories.

The nice thing about local media is that it is positively *easy* to get published. It’s also easier to get a relationship going with local editors/reporters.
